This publication provides an overview of the major conflict trends in Africa from 1989 to 2018. Key findings include 1) in the past five years, there has been an increase in the number of conflicts on the continent; 2) this holds for state-based conflicts, non-state conflicts and one-sided violence; 3) despite this, the number of battle deaths have decreased considerably; 4) in light of these contradictory trends, it is interesting to note that while the number of conflicts is high, violence often takes place in limited geographical areas, and more.
