This bulletin analyzes Russia’s re-engagement with Afghanistan, focusing particularly on the latter’s deteriorating security situation and Moscow’s attempts to 1) revive the country’s faltering peace process, and 2) offset America’s influence in the Greater Middle East. Given the latter ambition and the possibility of a renewed proxy-war in Afghanistan, the text’s author believes NATO should increase its security assistance to the Afghan Army and openly communicate with Moscow.
