This paper examines the haggling between the EU and Canada over the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA). As the paper’s author sees it, mounting opposition to CETA’s proposed ISDS arbitration process has led to large-scale public protests against the agreement. The problem is that rejecting the pact would endanger future EU-Canada regulatory cooperation, diminish the EU’s attractiveness as a trade partner, and undermine the European Council’s credibility when negotiating future international treaties.
