This collection of nine articles explores how countries, particularly in Europe, are making it more difficult for individuals from former Soviet countries to seek asylum or refuge. The particular topics covered include 1) how countries are increasingly sending those at risk back to their country of origin, sometimes by misusing the concepts of ‘safe third countries’ and ‘Internal Protection Alternatives’; 2) why asylum systems need to improve the way they respond to how regimes can target the families of political activists; 3) continuing Ukraine-Russia collaboration on extraditions; 4) the expulsion of Crimean Tatars and other opponents by Russia from Crimea, and much more.
