In February 2014, the UN issued two reports that documented human rights abuses in North Korea. The reports concluded that 1) the North Korean regime has indeed perpetrated crimes against humanity, and 2) that such behavior would end with the eventual introduction of Western democratic governance and an improved quality of life for the North Korean people. Unfortunately, what the reports didn’t grapple with, or at least underappreciated, is the power of the state’s leading ideology, Juche Sasang.
