This report reviews the policy of and support for the Lebanese Islamist organization Hizbollah, commenting on its position in the domestic struggle for power. The paper discusses Lebanon's sectarian rift between Sunni and Shiite Muslims, Hizbollah's Shiite support and relations with other sectarian groups. Subsequently, the paper sheds light on security developments after the 2006 war with Israel, comments on Hizbollah's Islamic identity and addresses the organization's ties with Iran and Syria. The paper argues that a peaceful solution will have to take account of Hizbollah's interests while simultaneously curbing its freedom of action.
