This paper examines the Pondok Pesantren al-Mukmin of Ngruki, Surakarta, one of the most notorious religious boarding schools of Indonesia. The school is especially well known for the presence of one of the leaders of the Jama'ah Islamiyah movement blamed for the Bali bombings of 2002. The author examines the Pesantren and discusses its curriculum, teaching methods and student profiles. He argues that the success of such institutions may serve as an indictor for the development of political Islam in Indonesia.
