This paper examines the central issues in the Arab-Israeli conflict and summarizes the main developments over recent decades. It discusses the conflict's background as well as the evolution of the peace process. It then discusses the prospects for the peace process and other political changes in the light of Yassir Arafat's death and Israel's planned withdrawal from Gaza and parts of the West Bank.
