This paper examines the initiation of the third stage of the European Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) in 1999, looking at the developments in the EMU during its first six months. The paper analyzes the impact the EMU had on industry in the UK and on the City of London as a financial services center. Furthermore, the paper describes the organization and work of the European Central Bank with a focus on secrecy and accountability.
