This paper discusses the political implications of the process of EU enlargement, focusing on the Agenda 2000, the EU Commissions opinion of the applicant states and the launching of the accession process. The author examines the political mechanisms involved in laying the groundwork for expanding the EU to additional member states. Furthermore, the paper provides information on the outlook of the European Commission and the opinions in the application countries on EU enlargement.
