This paper presents an overview of the revised strategic and operational directions of NATO after the Madrid Summit of July 1997. The author examines the initiatives and question whether they will have a fundamental impact on NATO’s character and the security situation in Europe and beyond, including Eastern enlargement, relations with non-NATO states and NATO's internal structure.
