This briefing paper assesses the implications of the July 2007 elections in Turkey. The author examines the the Islamic Justice and Development Party (AKP) and the implications of its election victory for Turkey's economy, secular system and foreign policy. The paper recommends that the US and Israel reach out to pro-Western elements in the Turkish foreign and security elite and work with them to restore the US-Turkish-Israeli strategic partnership.
