This paper discusses the social, economic and cultural roots for son preference in East and South Asian societies. The authors argue that over the past 30 years, the introduction of prenatal screening technologies combined with widespread access to abortion has made possible the selective abortion of female fetuses. The paper further points out some measures taken by the Chinese, Indian and South Korean governments to combat resulting gender imbalances.
