This paper presents recommendations for UN engagement in post-conflict security sector reform (SSR) based on a common UN approach for the mandates, planning, structure and activities of UN integrated missions. It introduces the concepts of SSR and "integrated mission," reviews the involvement in SSR of UN integrated missions and identifies lessons learned and recommendations for future UN engagement in post-conflict SSR. The paper highlights 15 key recommendations, including the need for a common UN approach to SSR, the importance of a holistic approach to SSR and the necessity of local ownership in SSR.
