This paper explores the emergence of ethnic politics in Nepal, focusing on the contributions of the indigenous nationalities movement to democratization. The author argues that efforts to bring about long-term political stability and democracy must address ethnic demands. She outlines the various ethnic groups in Nepal as well as the history of the opposition movement including state and international responses to it. The study concludes by offering policy recommendations.
