This paper on Sinhalese Buddhist nationalist ideology first outlines ethnic demographics in Sri Lanka to then explain political Buddhism and Sinhalese Buddhist nationalism. It examines Sinhalese Buddhist nationalist parties as well as major determinants of their ideology. The author argues that the ethnocentric nature of the Sri Lankan state must be overcome if the island is to become a liberal democracy and concludes with recommendations for the international community.
