This publication examines voters' tax policy preferences in the US. The author looks at the public’s assessment of specific tax votes taken by the legislature as well as the broader preferences about taxation and spending at the federal and state levels. He discusses what the electorate wants concerning taxes, whether tax policy preferences are correlated with self interests and examines party and state divisions. He also studies whether legislators respond to tax preferences of constituencies and whether voters hold them responsible for tax votes.
