This paper discusses the development of US strategic doctrine since the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001. The author examines the significant policy and doctrine changes implemented by the Bush administration and the public debate they triggered. It describes how the doctrine changes implemented by the âdministration radically questioned established doctrines of deterrence and containment, pursued the invasion of Iraq and ultimately brought into question valid standards of international warfare in the nuclear age.
