This article contends that a mishandled Brexit could hasten the erosion of European power at the UN. It comes at a time when Russia, China and the US are challenging the liberal internationalism that the EU promotes – and that some EU members question too. Further, the UK has been an anchor of EU policy at the UN, and Brexit might upset Franco-British UN Security Council cooperation as well as European coordination more broadly. In response, the text´s author recommends 1) that Germany and France need to raise their game at the UN to compensate for Brexit; and 2) the EU and the UK must commit greater resources to protect a liberal UN.
