This paper describes how the relationship between trade and environmental policy has become a contentious issue since the 1990s. The author presents an exposition of the international political economy of the trade and environment nexus with a view to elucidate the influence of economic and political forces. The paper concludes by highlighting the importance of different environmental priorities in different parts of the world and their impact on multilateral or unilateral choices.
