This paper examines different conceptions of change in international relations, asking how they are used and why it is appropriate to infuse inquiry with some disciplined research. It identifies markers of change, introduces several related concepts and looks at the confusion about change in international relations. Subsequently, it discusses the link between change and international institutions as well as the possibilities of institutional change. The author argues that a critical benchmark to identify and measure change is the international institution.
