This paper describes how the boom in global commodity prices and the expansion of Chinese interests in sub-Saharan Africa have become part of a general warming of external investors in the sub-Saharan region. The author examines trends in commercial financial instruments such as equities, bonds and commercial bank lending and their impact on regional economic development. The paper reviews the economic nature and behavior in developing countries compared to the more traditional patterns in development finance such as foreign aid.
