This paper discusses two conflicting orientations of Canada to the world, known as the East-West perspective and the North-South perspective. The paper introduces the history and importance of both orientations, looks at Canada's foreign relations beyond the US and assesses the phenomenon of "empire" in the international context as opposed to the state system. Subsequently, the author discusses Canada's position in the world, examines the evolution of social values and points to the choices available to Canada in the given international context.
