This paper explains how the US government has been waking up to China’s growing strategic presence in Latin America. The author details while the US previously diverted from Latin America and focused on the Middle East, China entered the Latin American realm and pursued a policy of economic engagement with the region. The paper states that the increased Chinese investment in Latin American telecommunications and space industries has implications for US national security and details some of the specific consequences.
