This publication deals with the evolving relationship between China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and its implications for US interests. The author examines how political, economic and security ties between China and ASEAN states have deepened since the early 1990s and looks at attempts to hedge against an ever-growing Chinese influence. The author argues that closer China-ASEAN security ties could advance US interests in the region. Intensified economic ties leading to the world's largest trading bloc, however, may constitute a threat to US long-term interests.
