This paper examines the social roots of America’s growing domestic terrorism threat. More specifically, it does so by looking at three conditions of social functionality - identity, community and purpose - and how reoccurring patterns within them influence the formation and behavior of ideologically motivated organizations. The author also explores whether the US government needs to update its legal definition of freedom of expression in order to adapt to contemporary social conditions, including those created by the rise of social media.
