This publication discusses US defense strategy and military spending. The author argues that the US defense budget must continue to rise notwithstanding large federal budget deficits. However, he also examines how future defense budgets can be constrained through burden sharing and privatization. Given the extreme demands of the Iraq mission, the author suggests how reductions in various weapons modernization programs and other economies might free up funds to add more ground troops to the military.
