This publication examines the history and evolution of US military presence in the Gulf region. The author focuses on US national interests in the area and appraises how US policies and military presence serve those interests. He finds that US military presence in the Gulf was appropriate for the assumed threat perception. For the time after the attacks of 11 September 2001, the author makes a number of policy recommendations. He suggests that the US engage in a comprehensive public diplomacy program in the region and take a slightly different, more neutral stance in the Middle East peace process.
