This paper discusses regional politics in the Middle East, the rising sectarianism in the region and policy options for the US. The author argues that in order to understand the dire predictions about the growth of Shi'a power, or to offer constructive advice about the trilateral relations of Iran, Iraq and the US, one must consider Iraqi-Iranian popular, religious and state-level dynamics. The paper concludes by offering policy recommendations for the US.
