This paper looks at the significance and development of the Russian Shtokman gas field, located in the Barents Sea. The paper examines the gas reserves found in the field, points to the complicated conditions in the field's Artic location and reviews proposals to invite foreign companies with advanced know-how to exploit it. Subsequently, the paper summarizes the developments that led to cooperation between the companies Gazprom, Total and StatoilHydro and comments on the respective course of Russia's energy diplomacy that alternates between the EU and Europe.
