This paper addresses the development of the Russian state-owned oil and gas company Rosneft, reviewing its rise to one of the most powerful Russian oil majors. It summarizes Rosneft's establishment, its shaky course during the 1990s and the beginning of its revival in 2000. Subsequently, the author sheds light on the company's growth and expansion since then, examines its production portfolio and presents key figures on its economic potential and strategy. The paper argues that via Rosneft the Russian government can control the domestic oil industry.
