This paper explores the establishment and development of the Russian oil company TNK-BP, focusing on its UK co-owner British Petrol (BP) and related political interventions. It outlines TNK-BP's founding during Russia's post-communist privatization, summarizes the company's subsequent course and looks at BP's involvement in the Russian market. The author reviews TNK-BP's oil and natural gas reserves, explores the issues related to the Kovykta regional project and sheds light on interference by the Russian government. The paper argues that due to some specific circumstances, TNK-BR is the perfect example of a company captive to the policies of the Kremlin.
