This article analyzes US operations against terrorism, focusing on the examples of Vietnam and Afghanistan. The author examines the US Army's response to the lessons learned in Vietnam and their long-term impact. Contrary to the accepted wisdom that nations which lose wars tend to learn best on how to correct their mistakes, the author argues that the US tried to forget the unhappy experience with counterinsurgency by refocusing on conventional wars.
