This paper analyzes French policy toward NATO in terms of its ambiguities. The authors explain how on the one hand, bilateral security and defense cooperation between Washington and Paris have long been cordial, yet the degree of cooperation has not extended into the multilateral aspect for NATO. The paper states that Paris has long suspected US motives in the alliance and harbored perceptions of inadequate political control over NATO's military structures.
