This paper discusses the boom in ethanol production in the Upper Midwest and its impact on regional water consumption. The authors explain that clarifying the relationship between ethanol production, water consumption and impacts on water supplies will benefit the US ethanol industry and rural development initiatives in general. The paper states that otherwise the shortage of water could be the Achilles' heel of corn-based and perhaps cellulose-based ethanol.
