This paper is a summary of a conference focusing on the Asian financial crisis, which began in mid-1997. It identifies reasons and implications of the crisis, examines China's role and introduces the respective views of international economic organizations. Furthermore, the paper discusses how South Korea was affected by the crisis and points to how these developments impact the security relationships within Asia and between Asian states and the US.
