This paper focuses on the relevance of European affairs in US policy in the year 2000. The author analyzes the past, present and future relations and assesses challenges to US and western security interests and objectives in Europe. He also analyzes the strategies and policies of the Department of Defense (DOD) in this crucial region of the world. Recommendations include the need for a lighter leadership "touch" in some areas and stronger encouragement in others.
