This backgrounder reviews the various actors involved in Syria’s civil war. It specifically profiles 1) pro-government forces, including Hezbollah, Iran, and Russia; 2) opposition forces, such as The Free Syrian Army and the US; 3) the so-called Islamic State; and 4) Kurdish People's Protection Units. For each of these factions, the text’s author details their core interests, their capabilities, and who they are fighting against.
