This report talks about the millions of Iraqis who searched refuge in Syria and Jordan in the aftermath of the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003. It assesses the causes for flight and discusses the numbers, demographic characteristics, status and rights of refugees in Syria and Jordan, the legacy of migration as well as political and economic ties between these countries and Iraq and the Iraqi impacts, perceptions and realities. The author finally addresses the regional response to this situation as well as the refugees' resettlement prospects and the scope of the international assistance.
