This paper analyzes the diplomatic relations between the US and North Korea between 1992 and 2007. It outlines the strengths and weaknesses of both bilateral negotiations with North Korea on the one hand and multilateral negotiations on the other. It then examines, from a Chinese perspective, the shift from bilateral to multilateral negotiations during the US administration of George W Bush. The authors conclude that while many challenges still lie ahead, the goal of a nuclear-free Korean peninsula is within reach for the first time in many years.
