This paper examines the strategic importance of the Black Sea region for Europe and the US. The authors analyze the security environment of the region as a major east-west energy supply bridge and a barrier against many transnational threats. They assess the competing interests of countries in the region and make recommendations for a NATO Black Sea Strategy and for enhancing regional cooperation.
