This report examines the strategic convergence between China's and Russia's policy toward Central Asia. The convergence is analyzed from a security policy and economic perspective. The authors trace if and how Russia and China together have managed to displace the US in Central Asia in the period following the attacks of 11 September 2001. They uncover the prospects and limits of a Russian-Chinese partnership and argue that even if they might challenge the US, the prospects for an expanded cooperation are not particularly bright.
