This paper looks at whether women have equal opportunities to serve in security sector institutions in the Gambia, and how well the country’s security sector is responding to the different security needs of women, men, boys and girls, particularly regarding violence against women. It specifically focuses on the Gambia Armed Forces; the Gambia Police Force; the Drug Law Enforcement Agency, The Gambia; the Gambia Fire and Rescue Service; and the Gambia Prison Service. The text also looks at other issues related to gender in the country, which concern the legal and policy framework on gender and security, the justice sector, and the draft of a new constitution.
