Can large-scale popular mobilizations undermine autocratic rule? And if so, what are the prospects of them subsequently transitioning to democratic governance? After looking at the mechanisms involved, the authors of this brief conclude that nonviolent dissent is much more likely to lead to democratic rule, especially when international conditions are favorable.
