This paper contends that in order to contain disease outbreaks such as the Zika and Ebola viruses, global health authorities should heed four lessons learned. They include 1) investing in adequate and long-term sustainable development; 2) coordinating medical research and development activities around prioritized goals; 3) energizing and maintaining a network of distributed multi-sector partners; and 4) never forgetting that sustainable health care depends on reliable systems and equitable access.
