This backgrounder describes the roles and functions of the UN Secretary-General. It specifically clarifies 1) how this individual is selected; 2) what are his (thus far) responsibilities, both as a diplomat-politician and the leader of a sprawling organization; 3) his working relationship with the UN Security Council; and 4) the likely future focus areas of those who hold the Secretary-General position.
