This edition of the CAD features four articles that review inter-societal relations between Turkey, the three South Caucasus states and Abkhazia. The first article focuses on Armenia, where in the absence of diplomatic relations with Turkey, NGOs from both sides have played a key role in developing cross-border ties. The second piece then focuses on how the Azeri diaspora in Turkey has influenced relations between the two states, and the extent to which such civil societal relations have ben independent of government influence. The third text focuses on how Turkey’s Abkhaz diaspora functions has served as an intermediary between the societies of Abkhazia and Turkey. Finally, the fourth article looks at the historical origins of Turkey’s Georgian diaspora as well as the importance of this group in Georgia–Turkey relations.
