In light of the Trump administration’s tariffs on steel and aluminum and further tariff threats, this text reflects on current US trade policy strategy to outline its potential implications for Europe. The author also highlights how the EU is struggling with an important, but as yet unanswered question: Is Donald Trump’s trade policy the result of a strategy designed to weaken geopolitical rivals like China, even if it adversely affects close partners such as the EU? Or, does Trump truly want to break away from the liberal multilateral order?
