This paper discusses China’s new cyber security law, which came into effect on 7 November 2016. More specifically, it focuses on 1) how Beijing dealt with cybersecurity in the past; 2) the background and rationale for the new statute, which provides a regulatory framework for the use of the Internet and related services within the country; and 3) the key provisions of the law.
