This issue of “Perspectives on Terrorism” begins by looking at how the so-called Islamic State (IS) uses the ‘Swarmcast’ technique to outwit those who try to limit its propaganda on the Internet. The subsequent articles focus on 1) how IS’ propaganda is increasing the vulnerability of Muslim women in the Western diaspora; 2) the recruiting success of IS and other jihadist groups since 9/11, which is partially attributable to the strategic mistakes of their opponents; 3) how IS continues to puzzle policy-makers about the dangers it actually represents; and 4) the role of drones in counterterrorism operations.
